#MatchforManchester was organised to show Cardiff's support for those affected by the Manchester terror attack. Not only did the match show how sport can be used to unite communities and inspire hope, it also raised money for those injured or bereaved by the attack.
The match took place at the Vale Sports Arena, in Penarth, and featured former boxer and Strictly Come Dancing star Joe Calzaghe and former Wales and Leicester City midfielder Matt Jones and was attended by former Wales and Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall.
The local businesses behind the match have donated all proceeds to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. Dan Sargent (Blue Stag), Dominic Broad (Pontypridd Town AFC), Gareth Jones (Welsh ICE) and Matt Callanan (Callapro Films) have raised £2000 so far, but are still looking to raise more by auctioning off a variety of signed items, including a pair of boxing gloves signed by Joe Calzaghe.
Dominic Broad, who manages local football team Pontypridd Town AFC, believes the match was a fitting tribute to the victims of Manchester: “We have regularly seen the power to bring communities together through sport, both here in Cardiff and in the great footballing city of Manchester. Thanks to our team’s experience in arranging high profile fixtures, we were able to offer our support to this great cause.
It was event was a wonderful success, there was a great turnout and it was a brilliant match. Thank you to everyone who played, volunteered, came along to watch and to everyone who has donated money. Thank you to the other Cardiff-based organisations which showed their support for #MatchForManchester, including Tramshed Tech, HSBC, South Wales Police and the Vale Sports Arena, where the event took place.
